Expression of a Homesick Heart
My heart
There is one reality I hold dear to my heart—the only truth that keeps me going in this cold, dark, broken-down, and sinful world:
The reality? This world is not my final destination.
Nothing will truly vanish. Not even this world itself will go away. And yet, I know deep in my soul that this world is not it. There have been many times when I’ve longed to hurry on to this eternal, wonderful place. Sometimes, my heart feels homesick for a place I’ve never been, but know I’m destined for—simply because I belong to Jesus.
Yes, I’m talking about Heaven—that glorious, splendorous place.
You may ask, “What are you looking forward to when you get there?”
I’m glad you asked.
There are four things I eagerly anticipate when I arrive in paradise. These are also reflected in my poem, I’m Going Up to Heaven Someday. After reading my list, I invite you to read the poem and see if you can find all four.
Four Things I’m Looking Forward to in Heaven:
1. Seeing Jesus.
This is first and foremost.
Jesus is what makes Heaven, Heaven.
He died for me so He could live with me for eternity. He has raised me spiritually over the years. He is my Father, my Savior, my love—and I love Him with all my heart. Even though I don’t fully understand why, I know He still loves me.
2. A New Body.
In Heaven, my body will be changed in an instant.
There will be no more sin, no more giving in to its demands. No more hurting others with my words or actions. No more making others stumble because I failed to act like a Christian.
There will also be no more mental illness—no more dark thoughts telling me I’m worthless or better off dead. No more emotional rollercoasters.
No more physical pain—no more huffing and puffing, no more diabetes.
And maybe I’ll finally be able to smell the air after it rains, the scent of the ocean, or the crisp mountain breeze.
I’ll be in perfect health—mind and body renewed.
3. Reuniting with Loved Ones.
I’ll see my brother Bill again—I miss him every day.
I’ll see my grandparents.
And those relationships that are strained here on Earth? In Heaven, they’ll be fully restored.
There, I’ll be able to look at every believer and truly say, “You are my brother. You are my sister.”
4. Creation Fully Restored.
In Heaven, creation will no longer groan under the weight of sin.
Its beauty will be completely unchained.
I believe I’ll see colors I’ve never seen before—breathtaking sights that our eyes can’t yet comprehend.
All of creation will reflect God's glory without distortion.
For your heart
I’ve never liked the saying, “Don’t be so heavenly minded that you’re no earthly good.”
It contradicts what the Bible says:
“Since you have been raised to a new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.”
—Colossians 3:1–2
To get through this life, sometimes we have to focus on the promise of Heaven.
Sometimes it’s healthy to pause and meditate on the realities of our eternal home.
Think about meeting Jesus face to face.
Think about the loved ones you’ll be reunited with.
Think about exploring God's creation freely, without pain or limitation.
So, if you’re feeling discouraged, just stop and remember this:
This world isn’t it.
It’s not your final destination.
There is something far greater and far more beautiful waiting for you.
I hope this brings you comfort—and I hope you enjoy the poem that follows.
I’m Going Up to Heaven Someday
I'm going up to Heaven, someday,
When God's angels whisk me away.
There I will see the One who died for me,
Long ago on a hill called Calvary.
Once in my loving Father's embrace,
All of my pain He'll forever erase.
My tears will be wiped away,
As He tells me I will be okay.
In His arms, mourning will cease,
Joy will return, bringing perfect peace.
Worshipping around God's holy throne,
His brilliant glory clearly shown.
Joyfully singing my very own love song,
To the One my heart will forever belong.
In Heaven, sin no longer resides in me,
From its power, I'll finally be free.
No more my broken mind playing tricks on me,
From mental anguish, I'll be completely free.
My broken body rid of all disease,
Able to move about with complete ease.
No more witnessing death's cold kiss,
Nor having dear loved ones to deeply miss.
No more my Enemy having his way,
Leaving many churches in disarray.
In Heaven, broken relationships are restored,
Because God's love has become the common chord.
A place where I will never again be homeless,
Nor experience this world's coldness.
Creation will no longer be under sin's curse,
As I enjoy its beauty while I traverse.
Where I will forever and freely roam,
Refreshed by the crystal sea's foam.
There experiencing Heaven's peace,
As I stroll down its golden streets.
Now whenever I'm feeling sad or lonely,
And unable to sense God's presence closely,
I lean on a promise that will never sway:
That I'm going up to Heaven, someday.
